1 Mean, Median, Mode and Range
Did You Know… Mean, Median, Mode and Range

2 Today We Will Learn… Mean Median Mode Range
And how to use these in everyday life, as well as the classroom!

3 Ready to start

4 What Do We Already Know? Sure, the words “Mean, Median, Mode and Range” all sound confusing… But what about the words we already know, like “Average, Middle, Most Frequent, and Difference”? They are all the same ideas!

5 6 + 9 = 15 Vocabulary Review Sum – the answer to an addition problem.
Addend – the numbers you added together to get the sum. 6 + 9 = 15

6 Definition Mean Means Average

7 Mean Mean is the average of a set of data. To calculate the mean, find the sum of the data and then divide by the number of data

8 What is the mean of these numbers?
Example: What is the mean of these numbers? 7, 10, 16 First, find the sum of the data. =33 Then divide by the number of data. 33 ÷3=11

9 Definition Median is in the Middle

10 Median Median is the middle number in a set of data when the data is arranged in numerical order.

11 What is the median of these numbers?
Example: What is the median of these numbers? 1, 10, 7, 3, 13 First, arrange the data in numerical order. 1, 3, 7, 10, 13 median=7

12 What is the median of these numbers?
Example: What is the median of these numbers? 28, 27, 21, 19, 25, 18 First, arrange the number In order from least to greatest. 18 , 19, 21, 25, 27,28 If there are two middle numbers, find the mean of these two numbers.

13 18 , 19, 21, 25, 27,28 =46 Median :46 ÷ 2 =23

14 Definition Mode is the most Popular

15 Mode The mode is the number that occurs the most.

16 Example: Baseball caps are the mode.

17 Example: 12, 15, 11, 11, 7, 13 The mode is 11.

18 How to Find the Mode in a Group of Numbers
Step 1 – Arrange the numbers in order from least to greatest. 29, 8, 4, 8, 19 4, 8, 8, 19, 29

19 Step 2 – Find the number that is repeated the most.
4, 8, 8, 19, 29 The mode is=8

20 Sometimes a set of data will have more than one mode.
In the following set the numbers both the numbers 5 and 7 appear twice. 2, 9, 5, 7, 8, 6, 4, 7, 5 The mode =7, 5

21 Sometimes there is no mode in a set of data.
3, 8, 7, 6, 12, 11, 2, 1 There is no mode!

22 You can remember that mode means the number that occurs the most because “mode” and “most” sound alike!

23 Definition Range is the distance Between

24 Range the difference between the greatest and the least value in a set of numbers.

25 How to Find the Range in a Group of Numbers
Step 1 – Arrange the numbers in order from least to greatest. 21, 18, 24, 19, 27 18, 19, 21, 24, 27

26 Step 2 – Find the lowest and highest numbers.
18, 19, 21, 24, 27

27 Step 3 – Find the difference between these 2 numbers.
27 – 18 = 9 The range is 9

28 Example: What is the range? 29, 8, 4, 8, 19 4, 8, 8, 19, 29 29 – 4 = 25

29 Mean The average The number or average of the numbers in the middle Median The number that occurs most Mode

30 Match Average Middle Most Frequent Difference Mode Range Median Mean
Directions: Use the clicker to match each word in the left column with the correct statistics term on the right. Match Average Middle Most Frequent Difference Mode Range Median Mean
