Comp book Open your comp book to pg. 51 to take notes. Set up your notes Cornell style. Remember: The best notes are notes that you organize on your own. Try not to copy.

EQ: What are the genotypes and phenotypes of blood type?

Genetics of Blood Your blood type is part of your genes, like your hair color or eye color. Your father gives you 1 chromosome with 1 blood type allele. Your mother gives you 1 chromosome with 1 blood type allele.

Alleles There are 3 alleles for blood type: –A –B –O

Dominant & Recessive O is recessive A is dominant B is dominant

Genotypes There are 3 alleles for blood type: –A –B –O So, there are 6 possible genotypes: –AA –AO –BB –BO –OO –AB

Genotypes & Phenotypes GenotypesPhenotypes AAType A AOType A BBType B BOType B OOType O ABType AB

Genotypes & Phenotypes Some blood types have certain types of antigens on the surface of the cells.

Co-dominant Blood type is a co-dominant gene. There are 3 kinds of genes: -Complete dominance (like the B & b traits we’ve been learning – Your earlobe is either attached or it’s not) -Incomplete dominance (Some genes blend together; you’ll learn about these in high school or college – A red flower and a white flower make seeds for pink flowers) -Codominance (more than one dominant allele exists, and they can both show up together – A blue fish and red fish have babies that are both blue and red)

Co-dominant Codominance - more than one dominant allele exists, and they can both show up together A & B are both dominant. O is recessive. A + B = Type AB but A + O = Type A

Dad has Type B blood type (phenotype) because he has a B gene and an O gene genotype. Mom has Type A blood because she has an A gene and an O gene Try it!

Dad has Type B blood type (phenotype) because he has a B gene and an O gene genotype. Mom has Type A blood because she has an A gene and an O gene Try it! BO O A

Dad has Type B blood type (phenotype) because he has a B gene and an O gene genotype. Mom has Type A blood because she has an A gene and an O gene Try it! BO O A AB AO BO OO

Dad has Type B blood type (phenotype) because he has a B gene and an O gene genotype. Mom has Type A blood because she has an A gene and an O gene Try it! BO O A AB AO BO OO AB (Type AB) = 25% AO (Type A) = 25% BO (Type B) = 25% OO (Type O = 25%
