Ecosystems and Change

What changes have you seen in the environment as you’ve grown up? Are these changes good or bad….or neither?

The Challenge How does change affect ecosystems?

In your group of 4, number off. Read the case-study based upon your assigned number. 1.The Crab Jubilee (p. 48) 2.The March of the Toads (p. 50) 3.The Bleaching of the Reefs (p. 52) 4.The Yellowstone Fires of 1988 (p. 54) Carefully read your assigned case study. Post-it notes are available, as always, to write down questions, unknown words, “ah-ha’s”, connections, etc. Or…use another note taking strategy as you read.

Find the other people who read the same case study. Within your case-study group do the following: Discuss the thoughts that arose and the questions that came up as you read. Do a quality job filling in the appropriate column of the “Case Study Comparison” chart. Make a flow chart (on the BACK of the comparison chart) that illustrates the events described in your case study. For example, you might show the following: What events led up to the main event.. The main event What the main event resulted in..

Return to your original group and do the following: In your own words, summarize your case study. Help your group mates fill in the “Case Study Comparison” chart completely and with detail!

CASE STUDY REVIEW:  Look at the sample concept map for the Bleaching of the Reef case study. Record this concept map.  In your lab notebook, make a concept map (as modeled) for one more case study of your choice (you cannot do the Bleaching of the Reef!) Show the main event, what caused it, what the social, economic and environmental effects are, etc. Use of color and arrows is recommended! Do this in your lab notebook following the information chart.

CASE STUDY REVIEW: Make sure you can describe the different cause or causes of ecosystem change for each case study: manmade natural introduced species sudden gradual global local single source multiple sources You will eventually have MAJOR knowledge of one case study; good knowledge of another and basic knowledge of the other two.

Case Study Diagram  Choose a partner (optional).  Select a case study.  Make a well planned out, accurate and detailed informational poster of the case study  Include sketches.  Color, attractiveness and neatness count.  Diagram should be informational for the average person (you might want to think of this as being a public awareness poster). Due next class period. You’ll have 20 minutes to work on it on Wednesday.  Accurate? =10  Complete? =10  Neat/Attractive?=10  Appropriate to Audience? =10  TOTAL=40
