9.  First battle  Although the minutemen were defeated, they showed that they were willing and able to fight. Known as “THE SHOT HEARD ‘ROUND THE WORLD”

10.  First battle in North Carolina  Fought between NC loyalists and patriots  Patriot forces were led by Richard Caswell, who would later become the first governor of the independent state of NC  The victory encouraged the colony to declare independence.  Prevented the British from attacking in the South until later in the war.

11.  Known as the “TURNING POINT” of the war, this patriot victory would cause France and Spain to declare war against Britain. They brought much needed supplies, troops, a strong navy, and hope to the colonial cause.

12. British Victory Colonial General Nathaniel Greene would retreat from the battlefield. Patriot Victory Cornwallis lost ¼ of his soldiers. He would retreat to Wilmington and be defeated in his next attack at Yorktown
