Chapter 9 Lesson 1 Craig Day 5th

Lesson 1 The Cold War began with the Berlin Crisis. The city of Berlin was split into 4 parts, each belonging to different countries. The US controlled West Berlin, while Russia controlled East Berlin. East Berlin was communist, while West Berlin was a republic. Supplies for the people of West Berlin had to be air lifted to them by the US.

Korean War Russia and the US also controlled another country called Korea. This too caused conflict between Russia and the US. When North Korea (Russian) invaded South Korea (US) troops were sent from both countries. This started the Korean war.

The Cuban Missile Crisis This was also a conflict between Communism (Russian) and Democracy (US). This time it was Cuba who sided with the Russians and tried to cause trouble directly with America! The President during this time was John F. Kennedy. No missiles were fired.

The Arms Race This title was given to the activity of one’s country trying to build more weapons than any other country. This started with the invention of the Atomic Bomb. Both the United States and Russia believed that having the most and strongest weapons would keep them safe. People began to build underground shelters to protect themselves.
