Saving Water The water industry in England and Wales loses 3.36 billion litres of water a day in leaks.* This waste is on top of leaks within domestic and commercial buildings. These leaks have a massive cost implication both in energy and money. * source BBC News 5 April 2012

Reasons for Saving Water Why do you think it is important to save water? Water treatment cost money. Water treatment uses energy. Treated water needs to be stored and pumped to where it is needed. Water is a limited resource there are many countries in the world that suffer from water poverty. Water is a finite resource.

Spray Taps

Spray taps pass less water at a higher pressure making them efficient for washing and using less water. Typically a spray tap uses 70% less water than a conventional tap.

Flow Reducing Valve

Flow Reducing Valves These are valves are used to adjust the flow of water, as the flow and pressure are connected this also has an effect on the pressure. Reducing the flow rate can result in a saving of 33%.

Low Volume Flush Over the years the amount of water required to flush a W/C has reduced, this is because the design of the pan has become more efficient. Prior to 1993 the flushing capacity of a W/C was 9 litres. After 1993 this was reduced to 7.5 litres. Since 2001 this was reduced again to 6 litres. The water regulations have also allowed a dual flush cistern to be fitted these deliver a 6 and 4 litre flush depending on the requirement. It is very important to fit the correct cistern to the pan. A pan that requires a 9 litre cistern will not function correctly if a 6 litre cistern is fitted. A low volume flush can save between 33% to 55% per flush

Maintenance Maintenance is an important part of economy within any system; if worn or damaged parts are replaced early they cause less damage to a system and save money and time. Leaking pipework and fittings may only pass a small amount of water but they do so continually and the amount of water soon adds up. This can lead to wasted water and damage to the fabric and fittings of the building.

Education of Users Most people know that waste is a bad thing. Wasting water is no different. When trying to economise with water informing people of ways to minimize waste as well of the benefits of these methods is far more likely to get them to do these actions in the future. People are far more likely to do something if they understand the reason behind it.

Ways of saving water? What ways can you think of that water can be saved in your house hold? How would you persuade people to do these methods?
