Content Standard 10 Differences between DNA & RNA

Eligible Content Identify the bases of DNA Identify the bases of RNA Differentiate between nucleic acid sugars found in DNA & RNA Describe the structures of DNA and RNA

Nitrogen Bases of DNA Adenine Thymine Cytosine Guanine Four DNA bases with the following parings: A-T (Adenine –Thymine) C-G (Cytosine – Guanine)

DNA Nucleotide SUGAR – DEOXYRIBOSE Phosphate group Four Nitrogen bases (one of the following) Adenine Thymine Cytosine Guanine

DNA Structure Double-Helix Twisted ladder Made of paired nucleotides Three nucleotides = codon Carries the genetic code on it. Always (A-T) & (C-G) ex. Double Helix

RNA NITROGEN BASES Four RNA bases Adenine URACIL – replaces Thymine Cytosine Guanine RNA – can NOT synthesize thymine. RNA – will replace thymine with URACIL (A-U) and (C-G)

RNA Structure SINGLE stranded SUGAR – RIBOSE Made of nucleotides Sugar – RIBOSE Phosphate group One of the following nitrogen bases URACIL ADENINE CYTOSINE GUANINE

Types of RNA Messenger RNA Ribosomal RNA Transfer RNA Messenger RNA is transcribed (copied) from DNA This is done in the NUCLEUS DNA = AAT CCG GGA mRNA =UUA GGC CCU
