1 Welcome to ESL, 1/5/11 Warm Up: – Pick up your ESL notebook – Turn and talk: Which kind of note taking format should you use for this passage: “Titanic was the largest ship in the world- as long as four city blocks. Many people called it the “wonder ship”. It was like a floating palace, with a swimming pool, carved wood and fancy gold lights. It also had many rich and famous passengers.”

Do: Use my quick notes to write a claim paragraph with evidence. Agenda: 1.Warm up (5 minutes) 2.Review class meeting changes/ reading changes (15 minutes) 3.Introduce claim paragraph about character (10 minutes) 4.Reading/writing through both periods (40 minutes) 5.Clean up (5 minutes)

8 Reading to Write: Your Task Step 1: Use at least 3 quick notes to find evidence to support your claim. Step 2: Use this evidence to help you write a LONG claim paragraph that includes: – A claim about your character – At least 3 pieces of evidence – At least 3 explanations explaining WHY the evidence supports your claim. – A conclusion sentence or two. – have a strong argument where everything ties back to the claim – Tip: Don’t use “I” in your paragraph

9 Who needs to do what? I did the 25 page writing challenge: – Write 1 claim paragraph for a book you’ve read or are reading right now – Write in Writers notebook I did the 5 book reading challenge: – Write 5 entries in your readers notebook – 1 entry MUST be claim paragraph – Write claim in READERS
