APPLYING OAIS TO DISTRIBUTED DIGITAL PRESERVATION Katherine Skinner, Eld Zierau IDCC Workshop, Amsterdam, January 14, 2013

Project Background  Worldwide, digital preservation initiatives are engaging in highly distributed methodologies, infrastructures, and organizational forms in order to achieve reliable persistence of digital content  Although the use of distribution is common, there is not yet an accepted definition for “distributed digital preservation” nor is there a common conceptual framework for building effective, reliable, auditable DDP environments  Consistent finding: DDP practitioners want to identify, define, and utilize a documented model for the range of relationships and interactions that occur in DDP environments

Project Background Exploratory conversations between Educopia, Library of Congress, Chronopolis 2009 March 2012 Oct 2010 April 2012 Fall 2012 Winter 2013 PLN2010 meeting in Boston; named a working group to explore DDP further; Draft précis circulated to major DDP groups for feedback in 2011 Invitations issued to major DDP groups worldwide; meeting planned for July 2012 at the NDSA meeting in Washington DC Interviews conducted with full project team; white paper authored to describe the DDP Frameworks project Public review of white paper scheduled to begin; expansion of project team as appropriate DDP Frameworks project timeline, start up activities Educopia and Royal Library of Denmark formally launch the project

Distributed Digital Preservation Definition: the use of replication, independence, and coordination to address the known threats to digital content through time to ensure their accessibility Developed at NDSA, July 2012

Project Goals 1. Articulate a common set of concepts and terminology to help build a common understanding of DDP practices 2. Describe scenarios for placing OAIS functional entity components across distributed environments (including multi- organization environments) 3. Describe the roles/responsibilities that might be involved in replicating/preserving digital content in technically and/or organizationally distributed environments MANAGEMENT PRODUCERPRODUCER CONSUMERCONSUMER Administration Archival Storage Access Data Management Preservation Planning Ingest mass processingmass processing pillar, cache, replica unit, …pillar, cache, replica unit, … coordinationcoordination micro servicesmicro services
