Lessons from the Law Galatians 3:21-26 and the Divine Purposes of the Law

A Most Important Council Acts 15:5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses." 6The apostles and the elders came together to look into this matter. 7After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, "Brethren, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe.

A Most Important Council 8And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; 9and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith. 10Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

The Progression of Galatians The Importance of the Purity of the Gospel The Importance of the Purity of the Gospel The Apostolic Credentials of Paul The Apostolic Credentials of Paul The Importance of the Cross The Importance of the Cross The Promise Came before the Law The Promise Came before the Law The One who has Faith is a Son of Abraham The One who has Faith is a Son of Abraham

Is the Law Against the Promise? 21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.

The Scripture Has Imprisoned 22But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

The Word’s Judgment Psalms 14:1-3 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good. The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God. They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one. Psalms 14:1-3 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good. The LORD has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God. They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one. Romans 11: 32 For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all. Romans 11: 32 For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.

The Custody of the Commandments 23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.

How Were People Justified Before Christ?

Same Faith/Distinct Content: Before the Cross – Looking Forward After the Cross – Looking to the Fulfillment 1 Peter 1:10-12

A Necessary Precursor 24 Therefore the Law has become our “tutor(?)” to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. “tutor(?)” to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.

How Does the Law Lead us to Christ? It takes us from the giving of the promise until the coming of the promised One. It takes us from the giving of the promise until the coming of the promised One. It reveals His righteousness It reveals His righteousness It reveals our sin It reveals our sin It contains foreshadows of the Cross It contains foreshadows of the Cross

The Inheritance of the Promise 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

#1 Delight in the Law of God Romans 7:22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man

#2 Remember Your Inheritance 1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
