2 Why? To gain the ability to objectively listen to music of many styles To distinguish between emotional and objective criteria To better analyze and review music.

3 As you listen: What do you hear? How does it make you feel? What do you like or dislike?

4 Types of Criteria Objective “Just the facts, ma’am” Not debatable Tempo Rhythm Instruments used Easily defined

5 Types of Criteria Emotional “How did it make you feel?” “What did you like?” Criteria which may vary between listeners Happy Music Nice Voice Hard to understand

6 Using your list… Using your criteria for “Ain’t that Peculiar”: Decide which criteria was objective and which was emotional. Form a small group, and separate all the criteria into these two categories Create a spreadsheet which separates these criteria When Finished: Compare your list with another group’s Discuss which criteria are most important

7 For each of the following reviews: List the criteria used to evaluate the song Discuss how this review made you feel about the song. Determine which of the criteria used was Emotional Criteria and which was Objective Criteria.
