1 Comenius project : Turning Ideas Into Actions (2013-2015) Mobility 5 : La Ville du Bois – France From 1st to 7th March 2015

2 Our school, ISC (Institution du Sacré Cœur). ISC is in the suburb of Paris, 25 km to the south of Paris. It is located in the Région Ile-de-France, in the Essonne department, and more exactly in La Ville du Bois. In our school, there are 1498 students.

5 I- A Capital for Tourism Paris welcomed in 2014 15.5 million international visitors. With London and Bangkok, they are the three most visited towns in the world.

6 I- A Capital for Tourism Date of construction : from 1163 to 1245 Number of visits per year : about 14 million (free entrance). The most famous cathedral of Paris is in the heart of the capital on the “Cité” island. It ‘s one of the biggest symbol of Paris since it has been built. 1st rank of the most visited monuments in France. Cathédrale Notre Dame

7 I- A Capital for Tourism It’s the famous basilica of Paris, a place of pilgrimage. It is onthe highest hill of Paris, called Montmartre. 2 nd rank of the most visited monuments in France. Basilique du Sacré Cœur Date of construction : from 1876 to 1910 Numbers of visits per year : about 10.5 million (free entrance).

8 I- A Capital for Tourism Date of construction : from 1190 to 1202 Numbers of visits per year : about 9.2 million It used to be a royal place of residence, but it is now one of the most beautiful museum in the world, with its famous painting, Léonardo de Vincis Mona Lisa (La Joconde). It’s notable for the big glass pyramid opened in 1988. 3rd rank of the most visited monuments in France. Le Louvre

9 I- A Capital for Tourism Date of construction : from 1887 to 1889 Numbers of visits per year : 7 million The Eiffel Tower was built for the 1887 universal exhibition in Paris. It is 320 meters high. 4th rank of the most visited monuments in France. Tour Eiffel

10 I- A Capital for Tourism Date of construction : 1624 Number of visits per year : nearly 7 million At only 17km from Paris, this castle was built under the reign of Louis XIV. It’s a symbol of power and glory. 5th rank of the most visited monuments in France. Château de Versailles

13 II- A Capital for Business This area was built on the axis of the Bastille and the Arc de Triomphe. It is located in the department of Hauts-de-Seine (92). This is the first European business district. It consists mainly of large buildings. La Défense

14 II- Capital for business The area stretches over one hundred and sixty acres. The layout of the area started in 1958. The first building was the CNIT (Center for New Industries and Technologies) inaugurated by General de Gaulle in september 1958. Followed by the Esso Tower (1963) and the Nobel Tower (1966) which were 100 meters high.

15 II- A Capital for Business In 1970, the RER (Regional Express Network) connected La Défense to l’Arc deTriomphe, and it widely contributed to the development of the business district. In the 80’s, the biggest mall in Europe « Les 4 Temps » opened. From 1983 till 1992, La Défense knew the most spectacular evolution, especially when they built the Grande Arche in 1985, an architectural feat. La Grande Arche

16 II- A Capital for Business Tour First Tour T1 (GDF Suez) Tour Granite (Société Générale) Saint-Gobain The main companies are : Société Générale, Total, Aventis and Saint-Gobain. Tour Total Coupole (Total) Tour Nobel (Aventis) New towers, called Tour T1 (185m) and Tour Granite (184m) were completed in 2008. The biggest tower is Tour First with its 231 meters and it is also the highest skyscraper in France. It was inaugurated in 2011. Today, this area is one of the most successful examples in the world.

17 III- A Multicultural Capital « Little Tokyo » Latin quarter Africa quarter Little « India » Chinatown

18 III- A Multicultural Capital The Latin Quarter in Paris In Paris, there is a quarter between the 5th and 6th district on the left bank of the Seine where there are a lot of restaurants serving all sorts of food, there are popular places like St Michel. This block is known for its student life, and it is the home of a number of higher education establishments : universities like La Sorbonne and historical high schools : Louis le Grand, Henri IV (Henry the 4th). It is also the place of famous monuments like Le Sénat (in the Luxembourg’s garden) or the Panthéon. Moreover there are religious monuments of different types of worships : mosques, churches…… Place de La Sorbonne Place Saint Michel

19 III- A Multicultural Capital « Little Tokyo » in Paris There is a Japanese district wedged between Le Louvre et L’Opéra Garnier. There, we can see that their businesses are flourishing. Also, there are a lot of : - duty-free shops, - bookstores with a full range of Japanese periodicals, - and restaurants (especially on Ste Anne street in the 1st district).

20 III- A Multicultural Capital Africa in Paris. « Africa in Paris » is, first of all, a huge community which has lots of origins from different countries on the African continent. This district is located at Château Rouge (Red Castle). Here you can find the most famous African market of Paris (rue Dejean). It is a very lively area : they sell everyday fresh and colored produce which attracts customers.

21 III- A Multicultural Capital « Little India » The Indian quarter is the area loosely tied between Porte de La Chapelle (18th district), Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est (10th district). People from the subcontinent live there. We can find typical products like spices, gastronomic specialities, clothes or different movies from Hollywood to rent. We can also visit the Hindu temple.

22 III- A Multicultural Capital Chinatowns in the French capital. Paris has got more than 3 «Chinatowns» where Asian people expand their businesses. At first, they settled in a place called «The golden triangle» between Choisy and Ivry’s avenue in the 13th district, where you can even find a Chinese Mac Donald’s ! Afterwards, a part of the population moved to Belleville where people are mainly from Zhejiang (China). Another place is older but less visible, inhabited by people from Wenzhou (China), at Volta Street and Mayor Street in the 3rd district. In these places, we can find restaurants which serve Asian specialities and supermarkets like Paris Store or Fréres Tang which sell exotic products. When it’s the Chinese New Year in the middle of February these areas are very amusing and lively. They organize parades of tanks with folk songs and dances, everyone can take part in ; there are shows with a dragon’s dance and they burst firecrackers to chase away the evil spirit. 23 09.01.2015 La Place de la République Place More than 3.3 million people paraded on Sunday, January 11th in Paris and in France to defend our democratic values and to challenge terrorism which caused 17 deaths in France.
