** Use the textbook and/or electronic device to answer the questions o What is Interphase? (pg. 96) Period before cell division; in this period the cell grows, makes a copy of its DNA and prepares to divide. o What is Mitosis? (pg. 97) Stage during which the cell’s nucleus divides into 2 nuclei (1 copy of the DNA is distributed into each of the two daughter cells). o What is Cytokinesis? (pg. 100) Cytokinesis completes the process of cell division; the cytoplasm divides and the organelles are distributed into each of the 2 new cells. Bellringer Monday 12/7/15 Unit: 4Standard: Cell division & Mitosis Learning Target: I can explain the process of mitosis

MITOSIS CELL DIVISION

o Organisms are made of billions of cells o Cells get damaged and/or periodically die and need to be replaced o Living cells split into 2 identical copies to multiply Why do cells divide?

Cell Life Cycle 1) Interphase: o period of growth and development o Longest phase o Cell gets larger & DNA gets copied 2) Cell Division: o nucleus divides into 2, each with its own copy of DNA (mitosis) it makes 2 cells

o Type of asexual reproduction  Only one cell to generate other cells o Copy system of the cell  2 identical cells are generated MITOSIS

Mitosis P M A T Cytokinesis o P - Prophase o M - Metaphase o A – Anaphase o T – Telophase o Cytokinesis INTERPHASE, then MITOSIS 2 NEW CELLS INTERPHASE

o Period of growth and development o Longest phase o DNA is unraveled at first (looks like spaghetti noodles) o Cell is preparing to multiply:  DNA gets copied and coils into X-shaped chromosomes Interphase

o Nuclear membrane dissolves o DNA now floats freely in cell o DNA is in chromosome format (condensed/coiled in X shape) o Chromosomes get connected to spindle fibers Prophase Metaphase o Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell

o New nucleus forms around chromosomes o Chromosomes are pulled into 2 pieces o Pieces of chromosomes travel to opposite sides of the cell Anaphase Telophase

o Cytoplasm divides in 2 o Cell membrane encloses 2 new cells Cytokinesis Overview

o Mitosis makes 2 identical cells o Used to grow, replace cells that die or get damaged, and repair wounds o Single celled organisms use mitosis to reproduce Conclusion

o List the 4 stages of mitosis (in order). PMAT - Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase o Describe briefly the main events of Prophase. Nuclear membrane dissolves and chromosomes get connected to spindle fibers o Describe briefly the main events of Metaphase. Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. Bellringer Tuesday 12/8/15 Unit: 4Standard: Cell division & Mitosis Learning Target: I can explain the process of mitosis

o Interphase and Prophase: DNAtwo Growsopposite Coil/condensechromosomes o Metaphase and Anaphase: Polarmiddle o Telophase and Cytokinesis: Neworiginal Nuclei “Cell is pinched in around its ________ “ – NOT USED! Mitosis Worksheet – WORD BANK
