5 Diphthongs Diphthongs Diphthongs are produced as the result of a glide from one vowel to another within a single syllable. For example, the diphthong in communicate has a phonemic symbol /e/ to /i/. This represent of vowel movement. So diphthongs are considered a combination of two short single vowels
