3. Very Important Senior News!! If you have applied/plan to apply/or have an interest in attending ASU and want to be considered for the Obama Scholars Program, please read the important message below: This information is directly from the ASU website: By March 1, 2016 Students must submit their FAFSA and have a complete ASU admissions application on file (application, test scores, transcripts and application fee).FAFSAASU admissions application By June 1, 2016 Students must submit all requested documents for financial aid verification. * There are no exceptions to these dates. The FAFSA must be free of errors and the admissions application with all necessary materials must be complete to be eligible for consideration. Be sure to apply early in order to resolve any errors or issues before the deadline dates.

4. U of A – Assurance Program (Similar to the ASU Obama Program) Applied for admissions, paid your application fee (FAFSA) by March 1st. (The FAFSA must be free from any errors.) File as a dependent student Must have a 3.0 Un-weighted core GPA when you apply If you meet all the eligibility criteria listed above, you will be invited to complete and submit the required College Board PROFILE application** by March 31st to be considered for Arizona Assurance. In addition, if requested, submit all requested tax and other documentation as directed by May 1st. Refer to the U of A website for additional information: http://financialaid.arizona.edu/assurance U of A Assurance is a little different than ASU Obama Scholars - THEY WILL ONLY PROVIDE COST OF HOUSING FOR YOUR FRESHMAN YEAR!

6. What does financial aid mean? THERE ARE FOUR TYPES Federal student aid (grants/loans) Student aid from colleges Scholarships from other sources State Grants and Scholarships

7. How much federal student aid can I get? In general, depends on your financial need. Financial need determined by Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and cost of attendance (COA) EFC comes from what you report on FAFSA COA is tuition, fees, room and board, transportation, etc. COA – EFC = financial need

8. Remember what I said? VERY IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND – The more expensive your school is the more money you may be offered for college. Your EFC will STAY THE SAME with each college but MAY change each year!

9. But I’ll be living on my own…. The 13 questions! Yes to any? I was born before January 1, 1993 I am working on a Masters degree or beyond I am married I have children and provide more than half of their support I have other dependents (siblings, parents, etc.) Since I turned age 13, both of my parents were deceased I was a dependent or ward of the court since turning age 13 I currently am or I was an emancipated minor I am serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces I was in foster care since turning age 13 I am a Veteran I am currently or I was in legal guardianship I am homeless or I am at risk of being homeless

10. How much federal student aid is available? First-year student in 2015-2016 Maximum amounts allowed: Federal Pell Grant: approximately $5,775 TEACH Grant: $4,000 Federal Perkins Loan: $5,500 (not avail at all schools) Federal William D Ford Direct Loan: $5,500 Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant: up to $4,000 (less at CC – more at UNIV) Federal Work-Study: depends on funds available at school Direct PLUS Loan (for parents): COA minus other aid received

12. What is the first thing I need to do? Create a FSA ID! Visit www.fafsa.ed.govwww.fafsa.ed.gov

13. What next? Use FAFSA on the Web Worksheet to get ready. Get worksheet at www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov/worksheet Use checklist to gather documents you need. Fill out worksheet to prepare your answers. ATTEND COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY! February 13 th and February 14 th !

14. After I get a FSA ID and complete the worksheet, then what? Fill out your FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov Apply on or after Jan.1 but as early as possible to meet all deadlines. Need help? Use “Live Help” icon or call 1-800-4-FED-AID. Don’t forget to print confirmation page.

15. After you have completed it….. Watch for response by e-mail, from FederalStudentAidFAFSA@cpsemail.ed.gov, or by mail If you “estimated” the income from 2015, once you have the actual income tax information, go in and make corrections.

16. What happens next? Each school will tell you how much aid you can get at their school. Log into your school’s website and check often under “financial aid” for your aid. Once you decide which school to attend, keep in touch with the financial aid office to find out when and how you will get your aid.

18. Chandler Unified School District Annual Financial Aid Night will be on Wednesday, January 13 th at the Chandler Center for the Arts, doors open at 5:30 pm, presentation starts at 6:00 pm. I highly recommend your parents attend this session for information on how to fill out the FAFSA! Where else can I get more info?
