1 Review for Test #2  Responsible for: - Chapters 5, 6 (except springs in 6.2), 7 (except 7.3), 8 (except springs), and 12 (12.1-3 only), as well as 1-4 - Notes from class - Problems worked in class - Homework assignments  Test format: - 13 problems, 8 simple, 4 intermediate, 1 advanced, 7.7 pts each - Time: 50 minutes only  Test materials: - Pencil, eraser, paper, and calculator - No formulae sheet - Closed textbook and notes

2 Material Covered  Chapter 5 (12): Forces and Newton’s Laws of Motion - Forces: gravitational, normal, weight - Newton’s 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Laws - Application of  Chapter 6 (12): Applications of Newton’s Laws - Friction, tension - Uniform circular motion: centripetal acceleration, banked curves, orbital period and speed - Kepler’s laws  Chapter 7 and 8: Work and Energy - Work, kinetic energy, potential energy - Work-Energy Theorem - Conservation of (Mechanical) Energy - Conservative and non-conservative forces (work)

3 Example Problem, Graded tests returned by next Monday A grappling hook, attached to a 1.5-m rope, is whirled in a circle that lies in the vertical plane. The lowest point on this circle is at ground level. The hook is whirled at a constant rate of three revolutions per second. In the absence of air resistance, to what maximum height can the hook be cast? Method: use concepts of conservation of mechanical energy and uniform circular motion
