1 Telling Your Program’s Story: Using Success Stories for Program Promotion TRAINING THREE Jessica Luginbuhl, MPH PHPS Fellow CCCB

2 Day Three: Objectives  To discuss outcomes of the Graffiti exercise.  To learn how to pitch an idea to different audiences.  To learn steps to prepare for the creation of you very-own success story.

3 Re-cap: Second Training  During the second training we: Learned from participants’ elevator story examples. Learned how to create a title for a success story. Discussed collection methods.

4 Re-cap: First Training  During the first training we: Defined success stories and the rationale for using them. Described types and formats of success stories. Learned how to construct your own elevator story.

5 Graffiti Exercises  What did you all find out?  How many sticky notes did you have?  Did people include stories from all levels (upstream, midstream and downstream)?

6 Who is the Audience?  Major business industries in your state  Civic organizations  Policymakers State management; Local officials  Schools or Universities  Media sources  Foundations

7 Before you Get Started:  Before you get started ask: Who is your audience? What is the goal of the story? Will the story be used for a chance meeting or a formal request for information? Is the story timely?

8 Write for your Reader not Yourself  Always show benefit  Memorable fact/truth  Emotional hook  Paint a picture  Sense of immediacy  The ASK **All from the perspective of your audience

9 One-Page Success Story  Powerful way to catch the attention of policy makers, funders etc.  Polished document that speaks to the heart of your program  Uses pictures to complete the story  Include partner logos  Includes your contact information

10 Format of a One-pager  Title- First opportunity to grab the attention of your reader  Define the Issue-clearly identify it  Program Description-spark their interest  Impact Statement-”what does this all mean?”  Action Suggestions-tell them what they can do  Contact Information

11 Task #3  Begin creating a one-pager Use your elevator story, titles, audience and other considerations to begin formulating  Look at examples in the workbook for further guidance
