To report the 2-year clinical and radiographic results of patients treated with magnetically controlled growing rods (MCGR). Objective

MCGR for EOS has been reported to provide adequate spinal growth and curve correction while eliminating surgical lengthening procedures 1. This study was designed to report the results of MCGR patients with 2-year follow up. 1. Cheung, K. M., et al. (2012). "Magnetically controlled growing rods for severe spinal curvature in young children: a prospective case series." Lancet 379(9830): 1967-1974. Summary of background data

Retrospective study of MCGR patients Inclusion criteria: 1) Major curve size ≥ 30° 2) T1-T12 thoracic height < 22 cm 3) Ten years and younger 54 patients enrolled 23 had 2-year follow-up. All patients were evaluated at baseline, 6, 12, and 24 months. Methods

Etiology (%)

Mean Pre-op ageDeNovo: 6.6±2.6 years Conversion: 8.3±2.2 years Adverse events41 adverse events occurred in 11 patients, of which 14 events were implant related Major coronal curve magnitude DeNovo: improved from 61° to 34° from baseline to post operation Conversion: Improved from 49° to 44° from baseline to post operation Curve correctionmaintained for two years in both groups. T1-S1 heightDeNovo: improved from 253 to 289 mm and was maintained for two years. Conversion: Some decline in T1- S1 height; mean loss of 4.2 mm (1.5%) from post operation to two years, p > 0.05). Results

% Major coronal curve correction compared with baseline

% T1-S1 height changes compared with baseline

This study showed satisfactory curve correction and growth is achieved among primary cases. T1-S1 height in conversion cases had a slight decline compared with post-op in two years. However, this decline was not statistically significant. Conclusion

The limitations of this study include: 1. sample size 2. variation in diagnosis and age, 3. retrospective nature of the study. Limitations

Thanks
