1 English III—November 18, 2015 Daily Warm-up: How does the tone of the New York Times differ from the tone of the Daily Show? How might a writer use tone to advance an opinion? Homework: Reading Plus due Sunday at 11:59.

2 Satire What is the difference between Horatian Satire and Juvenalian Satire? Writer’s of satire often employ irony. What are the three types of irony? What is the effect if a text intended to be ironic is not taken as such by it’s audience?

Use your book (pg. 226) and the internet to fully understand your terms and then find a video or other visual example to use to explain your terms to the class. Caricature Wit Parody Invective

4 Persona Persona is a voice or ma mask that an author, speaker, or performer assumes for a particular purpose. In satire, authors often adopt a persona to convey a perspective different from his or her own in order to make a point. Can you think of any examples?

5 Let’s Hear It for the Cheerleaders Where do you see caricature? How is dramatic irony used in the first 2 paragraphs? Why does the author do this? What does the author parody several times? Is this an example of Horatian or Juvenalian satire? What are some characteristics of the author’s persona?

6 Let’s Hear It for the Cheerleaders Bouchier uses lofty diction: “frenzied rites,” “extravagant gestures,” “excessive acrobatics,” etc. as well as long sentences and allusions to historical and literary elements. How does this style contrast with the subject?
