I. God Demands Self-Discipline But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. (1 Cor. 9:27) Self-Discipline is vital in living as a Christian. 5 Yea, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply virtue; and in your virtue knowledge; 6 and in your knowledge self-control… 9 For he that lacketh these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. (2 Pet. 1:5-9)

II. Follow The Example Of Christ For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22 "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth"; 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously. (1 Pet. 2:21-23)

Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. (1 Cor. 11:1) Even in the worst of circumstances, Jesus refused to use profane language. Thus, if we claim to be a followers of Christ, can we use such language? Even in the worst of circumstances, Jesus refused to use profane language. Thus, if we claim to be a followers of Christ, can we use such language?

III. Profane Words Reflect A Profane Mind Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. (Heb. 12:14-16) Profane: Permitted to be trodden, unhallowed, defiled (cp. 1 Tim. 1:9)

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. (Pr. 4:23) Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. (Mt. 12:34-37) Our speech is rooted in our heart.

IV. Kinds Of Profane Speech A. Abusive, Contemptuous Words: 1. Curse, Detest, Denounce (Jms 3:9-10) 2. Railing, vilification (Eph. 4:31; Mk. 15:29) 3. Insulting (“thou fool”, Matt. 5:21-22 ) B. Dirty Speech ( innuendo, Eph. 5:4). C. Lies (Col. 3:9; Rev. 21:8). D. Irreverent & Empty Promises (Ex. 20:7; Matt. 5:33-37). E. Gossip & Slander (Rom. 1:29-30) F. Careless ( Euphemisms, Mt. 12:34-37). [“Crikey” - used as a mild oath, euph. for Christ. Merriam-Webster]

God Will Judge Our Speech God Demands Self-Discipline –1 Cor. 9:27; 2 Pet. 1:5-9 Follow The Example Of Christ –1 Pet. 2:21-23; 1 Cor. 11:1 Profane Words Reflect A Profane Mind –Heb. 12:14-16; Pr.4:23; Mt.12:34-37 Kinds Of Profane Speech –James 3:9-10; etc.

Conclusion MATTHEW 5 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. We live in a profane society, but that allows us an opportunity to let the light of Christ shine.
