2 OPENING 18 AUG 2015 Do Now #3: In your opinion, what is a MYTH? Give an example of a myth and explain how this story fits the “requirements” or characteristics of a myth. (this Do Now may be written on the same page as Do Now #2)

3 WHAT IS A MYTH? myth miTH noun 1. a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events. synonyms: folk tale, folk story, legend, tale, story, fable, saga, mythos, lore, folklore, mythology "ancient Greek myths" 2. a widely held but false belief or idea. "he wants to dispel the myth that sea kayaking is too risky or too strenuous"

4 HELEN OF TROY Who was Helen of Troy? According to myth, Helen of Troy's beauty was the cause of the Trojan War. She has been called 'the face that launched a thousand ships.‘  daughter of Zeus and a mortal woman  had many suitors and was kidnapped at a young age  brothers invaded Athens and successfully returned her home  Odysseus had all suitors take an oath protect the one suitor was chosen for Helen, King Menelaus. The Trojan War  Beauty contest was held, and the winner was promised in marriage to Paris – Helen won.  Helen left with Paris (either by choice or forced)  King Menelaus outraged, raged way to bring his wife back home.

6 OPENING 21 AUG 2015 Take a copy of “The Greek Gods – History Channel Video” handout and your own paper. As you watch the video, answer the questions on your own paper. (All questions go in order with the video)
