G REAT K EY W ORD S EARCHES R ESEARCH - QUALITY W EB S EARCHING G OOGLE AND B EYOND

Search effectively and precisely Extract keywords from your inquiry Use Boolean searching Goals

H OW G OOGLE WORKS http://www.commoncraft.com/search BEFORE you search: “Crawls” pages on the public web copies text & images, indexes everything. WHEN you search: Automatically ranks pages in your results Word occurrence and location on page Popularity - a link to a page is a vote for it ~ 200 factors in all (secret!)!

H OW DO I PREPARE TO SEARCH ? Formulate your search question carefully Examples I want to find information on good reptile pets for beginners.

H OW DO I PREPARE TO SEARCH ? Identify keywords When do the Monarch butterflies migrate? What is the state bird of Illinois?

B OOLEAN Logical operators let you create relationships between search terms. There are three logical operators: and Using and will only provide links to sites which have BOTH of these words present. or The or operator specifies that one or the other or both of the words. not The not operator specifies that the word before the operator must occur but the word after the operator must not occur for a record to match. (In Google must use “-”)

C OMPARE San Francisco Giants 2004 2005 546,000 results San Francisco Giants 2004 OR 2005 673,000 results AND NARROWS SEARCH NOT “-” NARROWS SEARCH OR BROADENS SEARCH San Francisco Giants 2004 not 2005 448,000 results

Specify exact phrases with quotes “king Tutankhamen” "Alexander Bell" “some are born great” Exclude or require a word proliferation -nuclear bush legacy +environment anti-virus -software Wildcard * Obama voted * on the * bill

E XAMPLE 1: U SING THE K EYWORD AND E NTIRE D OCUMENT /F ULL T EXT I NDEXES Keyword (ke) television AND Keyword (ke) satellite AND Entire Document (tx) competition This is a search for articles about the satellite television industry that mention competition. One way to achieve success in an Advanced Search is to experiment with different indexes. Finding a word in the Keyword or Subject index is best, but the Entire Document index, especially in combination, can be an effective search tool.

E XAMPLE 2: U SING THE A UTHOR AND P UBLICATION T ITLE I NDEXES Author (au) felisa yang AND Publication Title (pu) computer shopper This is a search for Felisa Yang's columns in Computer Shopper. If you have the document title index available, you can also find articles or a series of articles by title. Note that the author may be entered as yang, felisa or felisa yang or just yang. However, entering just yang may also return results such as Yang Zhou.

E XAMPLE 3: U SING NOT Keyword (ke) brian mulroney NOT Entire Document (tx) airbus NOT Entire Document (tx) libel This is a search for documents about former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, excluding any that mention either Airbus Industry or libel. This should effectively eliminate any articles about the accusation of kick-backs and Mulroney's subsequent libel suit. Notice that you must use the not operator a second time, rather than the or operator.
