All rights reserved. 5 1.2 History of the Internet TCP/IP –Transmission Control Protocol: early protocols for communicating on ARPAnet –Internetworking Protocol: created large network containing many existing networks –TCP/IP: combined set of protocols Use of the Internet –First universities and research, then expanded to military, then commercial and business use –Internet competition resulted in increased bandwidth: information carrying capacity
