-These disagreements created revolutionary groups such as Marxist revolutionaries

4. Revolutionary group splits

Mensheviks- moderate group wanted the popular vote
Bolsheviks- radical group led by Lenin
Lenin left Russia in the early 1900’s because of the Czar regime, but he kept in contact with the Bolsheviks.
Issues at home- showed the czar’s weaknesses and paved the way for a revolution

7. Bolsheviks and Their New Challenge

The white army was made up of anybody who did not approve of Lenin
They were given support by many outsiders, but could not beat the Red Army and their leader Leon Trotsky

14 million Russian’s died in 3 years

Significance- Bolsheviks were able both to seize power and maintain it!

8. Lenin’s Vision New Economic Reform Political Reform
New economic policy- smaller idea of capitalism
Allowed small factories, businesses and farms to operate under private ownership to allow the flow of currency again
By 1928, Russia was at its economic level before WWI

Split the country up to keep nationalism down
Renamed the Bolshevik party to the communist party
He created a DICTATORSHIP out of his reforms
Stalin would take over after Lenin’s stroke.
