Packaging Basketballs ■ The Lew Alcindor basketball comes in a cube-shaped box that measures 1 foot along each edge. These smaller boxes are shipped to stores in one large box that contains 24 basketballs. ■ TASK: In how many possible arrangements you can package the 24 boxes? Use the set of cubes provided and a table like the one below to organize your data. 1. How can you be certain that you’ve found all possible arrangements? 2. What is best way to arrange these and why? 3. Why doesn’t the company send these in sets of 26 basketballs? LengthWidthHeightVolumeSurface Area Sketch Adapted from: http://www.mmmproject.org/dp/mainframe.htm

Kareem’s career takes off and so do the orders! The company now gets orders for 40-50 basketballs at a time. What is the best number to send to minimize packaging costs? Extension

1. Looking at the data table, what relationships do you notice between length, width, and height AND surface area and volume? 2. How might you generalize these relationships to make a formula to find the surface area of any rectangular prism? Generalizing Repeated Reasoning and Making Use of Structure

▪ How would you describe this lesson based on the culturally responsive lesson reflection tool? ▪ What Mathematical Practices were you engaged in during this task? ▪ What mathematical understanding(s) might students develop from this task (and how might you support this process)? ▪ CCSS Mathematics Grades 5 & 6 Measurement & Data CCSS Mathematics Debrief

When would you have students do the packaging task within a unit on volume and surface area? Why? Connect to Practice
