Listen: The story “Bartlett and the City of Flames” is about a group of friends who are mapping some caves deep in the earth. Listen for the words: Caverns Chambers Stalactites stalagmites

Chambers - a room inside a cave We walked around the large chambers with slick, wet walls. Caverns - large caves We took turns calling into the caverns to hear echoes. Teach your partner these words.

Stalactite s-a stone shaped like an icicle, hanging from the roof of a cave Susan worried that the stalactites would fall from the top of the cave. Stalagmites - a cone shaped stone built on the floor of a cave The stalagmites blocked our path to the other side of the cave. Teach your partner these words.

Cause-and Effect A cause and effect relationship occurs when one event causes another event, the effect, to happen. How can I identify cause and effect relationships? There are certain clue words that are used to signal cause and effect relationships in a selection. What are some of these clue words? Let’s look at page EI-5

Cause-and Effect We are going to read about the structure of our planet. The first paragraph of the story “Earth” shows a cause and effect relationship. Scientist didn’t know much about the inside of the Earth (cause), so they invented seismographs (effect). When I see how one thing led to the other, I can identify cause and effect.

Earth Let’s read “Earth”.

Armor- protective coverings The knight was ready for battle under his shiny armor. Encases- encloses The rock encases the minerals. Teach your partner these words.

Extinct- no longer existing The dodo bird is extinct. Hideous- ugly A bat has a really hideous face. Teach your partner these words.
