Universities: OU (BA Humanities), Leicester (MA Historical Studies), Manchester (BD Theology & Religions), Huddersfield, (PGCE Community & Higher Education) I love University challenge because there’s a choice of who to support...

3 Jobs – shop work, singer, youth & community development, University researcher, Baptist ministry, Consultancy, Genealogist. How I got here: I started my own family tree, I went on a course, I decided to teach the subject myself Then I began to research other people’s trees for them (better than my name).

4 Definition of a genealogist: a person who traces or studies the descent of persons or families, first used 1605 (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/genealogist).http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/genealogist A family historian goes deeper into the history of individuals in their setting.

5 So, WHAT DOES A GENEALOGIST DO? Traces trees for clients, goes deeper – individual persons, occupational histories places histories, teach courses at various levels, trace lost friends or relatives,

6 So, WHAT DOES A GENEALOGIST DO? heir hunting, research for special projects (e.g. churches, WW1), surgeries and workshops ( eg. Libraries), talks, write articles or books, book reviews, radio, TV.

7 WHY STUDY YOUR FAMILY HISTORY? WHAT DO YOU THINK?

8 WHY STUDY YOUR FAMILY HISTORY? My reason is that as a trained social historian I am interested in the lives of ‘ordinary’ people and how they respond to those in ‘power’.
