1 The Poetry Unit Poetry begins in delight And ends in wisdom Robert Frost

2 Goals  To expose you to the art of poetry.  To comprehend poetic devices to help you prepare for the reading SBAC.  To work on your presentation and communication skills.

3 Poetry and the Value Meal  For this unit, consider reading poetry like dining at McDonalds.  Pick a number: Perusing and selecting poems you would like to focus on.  Bon Appetite: Analyzing how poets use poetic devices in poetry.  The final refill: Presenting and reciting a poem in front of your peers.

4 Pick a number  As you Pick a number, you will be looking at a selection of poems.  Choose eight poems that interest you.  Choose poems from the 10 th Grade Textbook, the Poetry Out Loud website or another legitimate poetry website.

5 Bon Appetite  The second stage of the unit, we will examine the wisdom of the poem.  You will be doing the following: -Analyzing poems in class. -Identifying poetic devices. -Completing a graphic and written analysis of your selected poems.

6 The Final Refill  For the Final Refill of this unit, you will be doing the following:  Taking a poetic devices quiz.  Reciting poetry in front of the class.

7 The Poetry Performance  Memorize and recite a poem.  Dress professionally OR like the narrator of the poem.  SLITM analysis  Connect: -Text to yourself. -Text to another text. -Text to outside world.

8 It's not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and falls short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement; and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be among those cold and timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.
