Support Standard:SMP 1, SMP 2, SMP 3, SMP 6, SMP 7, SMP 8 Prerequisite(s):4.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit whole number, a digit in one place represents ten times what it represents in the place to its right. For example, recognize that 700 + 70 = 10 by applying concepts of place value and division. 3.NBT.1 Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. Manipulative(s): Special Instructions: In this lesson, number lines are used to show the concept of rounding. By giving students a visual representation of the number being nearer to the value it is rounded to, they can see the relationship. Rounding the digit 5 is deliberately left out of concept. It should be addressed briefly as a special case during Skill Development/Guided Practice through the teacher’s modeling of question number 9.
