2 What Is Our Mission? To reduce crashes, injuries, fatalities & property damage involving commercial trucks and buses.

3 Who Are We? One of 12 agencies within the U.S. Department of Transportation One of 3 agencies focused on improving highway safety Established on January 1, 2000, with offices throughout the United States Approximately 1,100 employees 275 in HQ (25%) 825 in Field Offices (75%) 330 Investigators 50 Auditors 150 Border Inspectors 610 contractors for mission support

5 The Industry FMCSA Regulates
Approximately 715,000 interstate and foreign-based truck and bus companies. They manage: Approximately 8.8 million large trucks Approximately 32,000 motorcoaches More than 7 million truck and bus drivers (commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders and & non-CDL drivers)

6 FMCSA: Regulates interstate (and foreign) operation of commercial motor vehicles that: Weigh more than 10,000 lbs, Are used to transport more than 15 passengers, or Transport HAZMAT in quantities requiring the vehicle to be placarded Regulates intrastate carriers only in: Commercial Drivers License (CDL)(>26,000 lbs) Drug & Alcohol testing Writes & applies the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) Applies the Hazardous Materials Regulations to commercial vehicles
