1 Mixtures… In a mixture, different things are combined without being chemically joined. When two things join chemically, their atoms combine in new ways. A salad is a mixture.

2 When you mix the different vegetables together, they do not change into something else.

It is wet like water.

6 HOW? But can you take lemonade apart?
The parts of lemonade are very small. It would be hard, but you could take them apart. HOW?

7 To separate the parts of a mixture, you must rely on the different properties of each part.
Suppose you have a mixture of salt, pepper and iron filings.

8 SO… how can you separate it?
Each material has different properties. Iron is magnetic. Salt dissolves. Pepper floats. SO… how can you separate it?

9 Which does NOT occur in a mixture?
Atoms join in new ways Parts get mixed up. ALL properties stay the same.

10 Salt dissolves in water J. Pepper dissolves in water.
Which property can be used to separate a mixture of salt and pepper? Salt is magnetic. Pepper is magnetic Salt dissolves in water J. Pepper dissolves in water.

11 Add water and let the small rocks float to the top.
The owner of a rock quarry needs a way to separate different size pieces of rock. Which of the following methods could he use? Add water and let the small rocks float to the top. Use a magnet to pull out the small rocks. C. Sift the rocks through screens with different size holes. Add water and let the larger rocks dissolve.

12 Why does lemonade keep the physical properties of its ingredients?
F. It is wet like water It is sour like lemons. It is sweet like sugar. J. It is a mixture.

13 Which mixture is easiest to separate using only hands?
Peas and carrots Lemonade Salt and sugar Iron filings and pepper

14 The cake is sweet like sugar. The cake is dark like chocolate.
Which clue suggests that a cake is not a mixture? The cake is sweet like sugar. The cake is dark like chocolate. The cake can be separated into its ingredients. J. The cake cannot be separated into its ingredients.
