Post 1812 Nationalism Can fight the world's superpower and hold our own (while preserving values of the Constitution) End of Federalist party Republicans adopt Federalist beliefs White House, Star-spangled banner, rise of Jackson's legend

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Madison and Monroe's Era of Good Feelings Madison's policies- federal support of internal improvements, tariff protection for new industries, creation of new National Bank Similar to Henry Clay's American System James Monroe 1817-1825 “Era of Good Feeling” Appearance that politicians could get along Tries to avoid controversy Is all superficial

Marshall's Court John Marshall- Supreme Court Chief Justice McCulloch v. Maryland  Can a state tax a national corporation? Federal reigns supreme within their realm- no  Does Congress have the power to charter a bank? Enumerated powers (lose interpretation)- yes This is not Republican policy!

Monroe's Foreign Policy John Quincy Adams- Secretary of State- Makes things good with the British Andrew Jackson in Florida- blames Seminole Indian raids as a pretext to take Spanish land for USA Adams-Onis Treaty(1819)- Spain gives up Florida, US says Texas part of Spanish Territory, Boundary in the West (Oregon not part of Spanish Territory)  Give us some or risk loosing it all

Monroe Doctrine Written by Adams-Monroe presents to Congress in 1823  Us stays out of European matters unless our interests involved.  Europe should not attempt to colonize anywhere in the Americas  An attempt to colonize = “unfriendly act”  Little to back it up to start but sets US up as THE power in the Western Hemisphere
