6 What are some characteristics of a good time manager? Work in groups and come up with a top five list. Golf Balls and Sugar demonstration. What are your golf balls and sugar? Cue cards. Are you spending enough time on RESET? Relax, Exercise, Sleep, Eat, Time The less one has to do, the less time one finds to do it. (Lord Chesterfield)

7 Time Management Tips 1. Identify your goals. 2. Identify what you need to do to accomplish your goals and how much time you need to spend doing these activities. (study time) 3. Schedule these activities (golf balls) into your week first. When is the best time to do these activities? (a little at a time or all at once – S&M) 4. Schedule your sugar in as well. Everybody needs some down time. If you haven’t got the time to do it right, when will you find the time to do it over? (Jeffrey Mayer)

8 Time Management (cont). The Million $ question. Am I trying to do to much? What are you doing with your time? Monitor your time for one week. What are your time bandits? See also “Making your Mark”

9 Laws of Time – Be Careful! Parkinson’s Law – “ Work expands so as to fill the time available for it’s completion” (If you give yourself a lot of time to do something, it will probably take at least that much time). Derrick’s Law – “Things usually take twice as long as you think they will” (We often underestimate how much time it will take to complete a task). Time is like money, the less we have of it to spare the further we make it go. (Josh Billings)

10 Time Management Tools Semester Schedules Allows you to keep track of important dates and deadlines. Weekly Schedules Start by filing in your “must do’s”. “To Do” Lists Prioritize each item on the list using either A, B, or C.

11 Building a Weekly Schedule Start with your courses Calculate needed study time Add reoccurring responsibilities & appts. such as work and volunteer time Schedule study time and review time Include “me” & “flex” time Include time for meals, travel and errands Schedule shouldn’t be set in stone
