3. Starting a New Job The modules you have completed throughout the Pathways for Graduates course have mostly been focused on how to find a job, apply for it and do well in the interview so that you are the successful applicant. However, getting the position is not the end of the challenge. Starting the new job can be a challenge in itself, both shocking and exciting as you get used to new ways of working, new people, new surroundings and a new role.

6. Employer responsibilities When an employer takes on a new member of staff, there are an initial six tasks they need to carry out to ensure they comply with the law: 1.set a pay rate and pay at least the National Minimum wage 2.carry out pre-employment checks to ensure you are legally entitled to work in the UK 3.arrange employers' liability insurance if not already insured 4.register as an employer with HM Revenue & Customs 5.give new employee a written statement of employment 6.ensure new employee's first payslip contains details of all deductions (National Insurance, tax etc.)
