CARIBIC meteorological support Update Peter van Velthoven, KNMI Status: complete up to June 2007

WAS-trajectories 8 day backward trajectories every 6 seconds (0.1 min) WAS-samples are taken within a minute so the trajectories stick very close together, therefore: 15 additional trajectories are calculated in a cube centred around the sample to indicate uncertainty. p was 1.03 p was 0.97 p was 0.8  longitude 0.8  latitude WAS pressure

WAS sample 22 from flight 153 31 May 2006 WAS trajectories (each 6 secs) WAS “volume” trajectories Ordinary trajectories for 1 flight hour (5-day back)

New ECMWF scheme for water vapour (super)saturation over ice From 13 september 2006 onward Tompkins, Gierens & Rädel: QJRMS, 133, 622, p.53, 2006 ECMWF newsletter 109, p. 26, 2006

The CARIBIC flights Frankfurt-Canton: PV folds around the Tibetan plateau

Flight 130/133 November 2005 Most southern flight (into tropical air)

Flight 146/149 April 2006 Streamer / deep fold

Flight 150/153 May 2006: fold + deep clouds

Flight 154/157 5-7 July 2006 Above/in fold (subtropical TP break)

Flight 155/156 6 July 2006 Canton-Manila Mid tropospheric fold

Flight 158/161 31 July/2 August 2006 PV remnants

Flight 162/165 September 2006 Deep convective cloud?

Flight 166/169 October 2006 : 2(!) folds

Flight 170/173 November 2006 Cold air outbreak Deep into stratosphere 8-9 PVU

Flight 174/177 December 2006 Blocking anticyclone/high + fold fold

Flight 178/181 February 2007 Above/below relatively flat tropopause in high

Flight 182/185 March 2007 deep folds steep tropopause

Flight 186/189 April 2007 PV remnant

Flight 190/193 May 2007 Close to tropopause (TP) in “high” Subtropical TP break sampled at 2 levels

Flight 178/181 June 2007 Subtropical TP break sampled at 2 levels Real PV minimum or model artefact? Tracer signatures?

Summary Frankfurt-Canton-Manila Frequent sampling of subtropical tropopause break Examples of flying in/above fold Frankfurt to/from Canton Sometimes strong subtropial (blocking) highs over Asia Tibetan mountains seem to be preferred location for folds
