2 Session Outcome Participants will gain a deeper understanding about what reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text looks like in practice. (Key Shift # 2) 2

3 Close Reading Close Reading – a methodical and purposeful reading of text that may include rereading to establish meaning. Practice! 1. Read the standards and mark them. 2. Consider coding the text as follows. X =Something I already do ! = A change that might take more planning ? =I have a question about this/I am unsure what this would look like in practice Circle new or confusing words terms 3. Discuss your insights at your table. 4. Share with the whole group. PAUSE 3

4 Student Practice With your student hat on… 1.Read the content standard “closely”. 2.Read the student assignment “closely”. 3.List the tasks required to complete the assignment. 4.Discuss your tasks list with your content specific group. 5.Identify the reading and writing standards that support the assigned tasks. 6.Discuss tasks and reading and writing standards that support the assigned tasks with the whole group. 4

5 Complete the Puzzle 1.What student skills are required to master each standard? 2.What does the content standard require of students? 3.What reading standards should support the content assignment? 4.What writing standards should support the content assignment? 5.What teacher preparations are required? 7 Teacher Practice With your teacher hat on… 1.In your content group, select a content standard. 2.Begin to craft a student assignment that leads to mastering the content standard. 3.List the student skills, based on content, needed for the assignment. 4.Discuss your assignment with your group. 5.Identify the literacy standards that align with the assignment. 6.Identify changes in the assignment that will enhance the content by incorporating/integrating literacy standards. 7
