Based on Agriculture ◦ Plantations – large area of privately owned land where crops were grown through the labour of workers who lived on the land  Grew tobacco, rice, sugarcane and indigo ◦ Wealth is measured in terms of land and slaves Cotton gin changed the Southern Economy ◦ 1790 – 3,000 bales of cotton/500,000 slaves ◦ 1850 – 4 million bales/ 3 million slaves  1860 - The South was more prosperous than all Euro nations except England Why do you think slavery wasn’t as popular in the North? 6 Matching Activity In this activity, you will work in pairs to match the quotations and placards describing slavery for African- Americans Step 1 – get a quote and fill in your table Step 2 – find a match your quote with your picture Step 3 – write a comparison of the quote and the picture

For example, it says, “We had old ragged huts made out of poles, and some of the cracks were filled with mud and moss, and some weren’t.’ As the quote shows, these slaves lived in uncomfortable and possibly unsafe conditions.

For example, it says, “We had old ragged huts made out of poles, and some of the cracks were filled with mud and moss, and some weren’t.’ As the quote shows, these slaves lived in uncomfortable and possibly unsafe conditions. Placard B The main similarity between Quotation 1 and Placard B is that they both discuss the bad living conditions of slaves. For example, Placard B shows many houses that have wide holes in the side, allowing wind to come in. Likewise, the quote says, ““We had old ragged huts made out of poles, and some of the cracks were filled with mud and moss, and some weren’t.’ How do I write this?
