1 Our Lesson Decimal and Percent

2 Warm up 3/8 = 37.5% 7/12 = 58.33% 1/5 = 20% 4.70 % = 7/10 5.40 % = 2/5
Convert the following fractions to percent: 3/ = 37.5% 7/ = 58.33% 1/ = 20% Convert the following percent to fractions: 4.70 % = 7/10 5.40 % = 2/5 Confidential

3 Fractions are written in the form a/b, where b is not 0
Lets recap what we learned in the last lesson Fractions are written in the form a/b, where b is not 0 The number a is called the numerator, and the number b is called the denominator Percent means parts per hundred We use the symbol % for percent. Confidential

4 Recap For converting fractions to percent
Divide the numerator of the fraction by its denominator. Multiply the result by 100 and put the % sign. For converting percent to fractions First remove the Percent sign. Make a fraction with the percent as the numerator and 100 as the denominator and then simplify the fraction. Confidential

5 Let us start What is a Decimal?
The decimal point separates the whole units on the left from the decimal units on the right. The numbers on the left side represent whole numbers such as ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. The numbers on the right side of the point are the decimal values. Those numbers represent values called tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on. What is a Decimal? Confidential

6 Example of a Decimal Number
The naming difference is in the "th". Tenths are the closest value to the point. There are no "one ths” Confidential

7 Percent What is a percent?
The word percent comes from the Latin phrase per centum, which means per hundred. A percent is a ratio whose second term is 100. Percent means parts per hundred. We use the symbol % for percent. Example: 38.9 %, 64 %, 80% Confidential

8 Converting decimals to percent
For converting decimals to percent follow the following steps: Multiply the decimal number by 100 (for that move the decimal point two places to the right) Put the % sign at the end of the result Confidential

9 Example Convert the decimal 0.75 to percent
Multiply 0.75 by 100, we will get 0.75 x 100 = 75 So, 0.75 = 75% Multiply by 100. Put % at the end. Confidential

10 Example Convert the decimal 0.875 to percent
Multiply by 100, we will get 0.875 x 100 = 87.5 So, = 87.5% Multiply by 100. Put % at the end. Confidential

11 Converting percent to decimal
For converting percent to decimals follow the following steps: First remove the Percent sign. Divide by 100 (for that move the decimal point two places to the left). Confidential

12 Example Convert the 60 % to decimal 60 (Remove the % sign)
Now divide 60 by 100 and then simplify, we will get 60/ 100 = 0.60 (move the decimal point two places to the left) So, 60 % = 0.6 Remove % sign and divide by 100 Confidential

13 Example Convert the 85 % to decimal 85 (Remove the % sign)
Now divide 60 by 100 and then simplify, we will get 85/ 100 = (move the decimal point two places to the left) So, 85 % = 0.85 Remove % sign and divide by 100. Confidential

14 Your Turn Convert the following decimals to percent: 0.8 = 80%
= 80% = 95% = 40% = 32% = 55% Confidential

15 Your Turn Convert the following percent to decimals: 3.5 % = 0.035
3.5 % = 0.035 30 % = 0.3 45 % = 0.45 85 % = 0.85 70% = 0.7 Confidential

18 1) In Pakistan, 41% of the people in 1997 was under 51 years of age
1) In Pakistan, 41% of the people in 1997 was under 51 years of age. Write 41% as a decimal. 0.41 Confidential

19 Part of money spend on rides and gifts = 25% + 15% =40%
Q2. The graph below shows the expenditure of Jane’s family at Dream World. 1) Use a decimal to represent the part of money spend on rides and gifts? 2) Use a decimal to represent the part of money spend on games and food? Part of money spend on rides and gifts = 25% + 15% =40% Convert 40% to decimal 40% 40/100 = 0.4 Answer: 0.4 Confidential

20 = 20% + 40% =60% Convert 60% to decimal 60% 60/100 = 0.6 Answer: 0.6
2) Part of money spend on games and food = 20% + 40% =60% Convert 60% to decimal 60% 60/100 = 0.6 Answer: 0.6 Confidential

21 Q3. Order each set from least to greatest.
10%, 32%, 0.21, 0.15 Convert each one of the set either to percent or decimal. Let us convert each to percent 0.15  0.15 × 100 = 15% 0.21  0.21 × 100 = 21% Now arrange all from least to greatest. 10 %, 0.15, 0.21, 32% Confidential

22 Let’s Review what we have learned today
The decimal point separates the whole units on the left from the decimal units on the right.  The numbers on the left side represent whole numbers. The numbers on the right side of the point are the decimal values. The naming difference is in the "th“ Percent means parts per hundred. we use the symbol % for percent. Confidential
