Visualisation Project: Making something Invisible Visible Alessi, Jessica and Billie

Why Visualisations? It’s the process of making the invisible- visible They reveal and expose information, trends & patterns You have to “see it, to believe it”

What is the invisible we are trying to make visible? The production, manufacturing and distribution of Palm Oil in Indonesia & Malaysia. The growth of this industry in recent times The effect of palm oil farms on animal populations Th

Palm Oil : Background - Palm oil is a type of edible vegetable oil that is derived from the palm fruit, grown on the African oil palm tree. - Today, palm oil is grown throughout Africa, Asia, North America, and South America. - 85% of all palm oil globally produced and exported from Indonesia and Malaysia; but most of the time not using sustainable measures. - The industry is linked to major issues such as: * Deforestation *Habitat degradation *Climate change *Animal cruelty *Indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced, as the land and forests must be cleared for the development of the oil palm plantations.

More specifically: How Palm Oil is killing/ endangering mammals For example…. If nothing changes, species like the orangutan could become extinct in the wild within the next 5-10 years. Five mammals effected most by palm oil farms: 1.the Sumatran Tiger 2. Sumatran orangutans 3. Bornean orangutans 4. asian elephant 5. Sumatran rhinoceros Five mammals exemplify the impending disaster: the Sumatran tiger, Sumatran and Bornean orangutans, Asian elephant, and Sumatran rhinocer
