CHILD EDUCATION SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM PREPARED AND PRESENTED BY Nischal Malla 29 th October, 2015 7 th Youth Looking Beyond DisasterACTION PLAN, Nischal (Nepal)

BACKGROUND Gorkha Earthquake on 25 th April 2015 Thousands of schools were affected across the districts. Schools reopened on – 31 st May ( after 35 days) Second earthquake - 12 th May then again for about week schools were closed

Just after 5 days of Earthquake we organized child refreshment camp starting with 15 children living in tents reached to 100 children and lasted for almost 2 months.

Problem Statement Children were in trauma not only from the earthquake they faced but also from the struggle that their parents have to face for living. Some childrens’ family no more had the income source due to the loss of their father. Children were seen not aware about the basic manners such as hygenic, sanitation and even the respecting and loving others which could be positively changed by good schooling. This problem satatement is the fact from the child refreshment camp.

OBJECTIVES The major objective of the project is to support children from needy households in the continuation of their education. This project is to look for those children who are struggling to continue their schooling due to the Gorkha earthquake earlier this year. To know the complete background of the child including his/her family, including their financial status. To prioritise the most needy children, by comparision. To provide educational sponsorship to children which includes all school fees, stationaries and even uniform fees. To assure reputed organizations or individual sponsors that their support is worthwhile. Lastly, to make sure that child secure their right to education, which s/he nearly lost due to the impacts of diasaster.

METHODOLOGY Developed a detailed application form, covering the child’s family occupation and earnings. Have a picture taken of the child, one with the family and the other single one, for the purpose of keeping good records. And prepare the profile and have it updated on internet if permission is provided by the parents and child. Proposing different INGOs working for similar sponsorship programs. Even requesting individuals like friends and families to support. HOW IT WORKS?

In Addition This project not only limits to finding children and sponsor but also: Follow up : Timely communication with a child’s family. As well as keeping track of child’s academic progress. Acting Medium: Trying building the relation between the child and sponser. Can be through mail or letters. Extra Activities: Involving children in different extra skill developing activites such as winter camps, sports, art and so on.

CHALLENGES Locating children, from the most affected households for the study program. Finding the sponsors Financially challenging because we aim to provide best quality education possible, in private schools. Convincing the children to sign up for the program who had dropped out earlier from their studies could be a significant challenge.

Limitations In the starting phase the project would only be confined to Kathmandu (focusing on urban poverty). The enrollment of the students is done only from grade 2 to 10. Ideally it would be important for the child to have a commitment from the sponsors to allow the child to complete all grades in the school.

Budget Estimation The budget for the proposed program depends on different variables. Since, it’s a schooling program, the budget will cover the school fees. The administration for 20 kids will be estimated to cost 500 USD.
