10 Distributive Property Distributive Property says that multiplying a number by a group of numbers added together is the same as doing each multiplication separately. Example: 7 x 9 = 7 × (5 + 4) = (7×5) + (7×4) So the “7" can be "distributed" across the “5+4" into “7 x 5” and “7 x 4.” Think of the Distributive Property as the LEGO property! “Distributive” means you can take apart a hard math problem and put it back together in a way that is easier for you to solve.

15 Apply the Distributive Property What multiplication fact did we use to solve the problem of the day? 9 x 7! Let’s write that problem in unit form: 9 sevens On your white board, draw a tape diagram showing 9 x 7. Write the multiplication fact under it.

17 Use the Distributive Property to Divide We can also use the Distributive Property to divide. In Unit One, we used arrays to do this. We took one large array and divided it into two smaller arrays: 18 ÷ 3 = [6 ÷ 3] + [12 ÷ 3]
