4. The Meditation: PASTOR: Jesus, we know about the Great Commission. It is big. Huge. It involves the world, nations, marginalized peoples and world- class metropolitan areas. PEOPLE: You also gave us another “great” – the “great commandment”. It isn’t far off. It is next door. You called us to “love our neighbor”. PASTOR: You didn’t call us to “like” them – but to “love” them. To ‘apapao’ them with heaven’s unconditional love. PEOPLE: This is how the “Great Commission” gets started – nearby, not far away. With one soul, not the whole world. PASTOR: We have been so afraid of doing witnessing, that we have failed to be a witness. PEOPLE: Lord, love them through me. 5. The Profile … The Afar are a proud people, emphasizing a man's strength and bravery. Prestige comes from killing one's enemies. Many live in the Afar Plain or the Danakil Desert, one of the most rugged regions in the world, where temperatures as high as 125 degrees F and the average yearly rainfall is less than seven inches. They have various religious rites such as giving annual offerings to the sea to ensure safety for their villages. 6. Prayer … Pray for missionaries to brave the geography and climate of this region. Ask God to anoint the Gospel as it goes forth via radio to this tribe. Pray that additional evangelistic tools will be made available to the Afar. Pray that God would provide pure water sources for the Afar and their herds living in the Danakil Desert. Ask the Lord to raise prayer teams who will intercede for the Afar. Ask the Lord to bring forth a triumphant Afar church for the glory of His name! Pray that the Lord of the harvest would send forth long-term Christian laborers into Ethiopia.
