What are hurricanes? a storm with a violent wind

What do they do? hurricane, cyclone or typhoon can cause the level to rise by several meters. This rise in water causes massive waves to hit the shores near the storm. Overland, the hurricanes do a lot of damage, with powerful winds blasting the landscape. Heavy rains from the hurricane's clouds also cause flooding.

What are they made of? Hurricanes are made of wind, clouds, and rain.

Where do they come from? They usually form over the warm waters of the tropics, when winds coming from opposite directions meet up and begin to rotate.

What do you think causes the movement of hurricanes? Water vapor rises, adding its energy to the storm, and winds over the ocean push the hurricane around, often toward land.

What usually happens when hurricanes develop? An eye forms around the low pressure center.

Have you ever seen one?

Consider: Since hurricanes are so dangerous, how do people protect themselves from them? What kinds of machines or technology do you think people use to study hurricanes? Why is it important to study, measure, and track the movement of hurricanes? Which do you think is better at studying, measuring, and tracking things like hurricanes— people or machines? Why? Why is it helpful to know ahead of time where hurricanes are located?

Why did Hurricane Andrew lose energy?

What is the “fuel” for a hurricane?
