Introduction Context –Define the Balanced Scorecard: It is a tool to measure the performance of SANParks –Why the Balanced Scorecard: It is best practice for measuring an organisation’s achievement of goals –What is the objective The SANParks Balanced Scorecard (BSC) provides a comprehensive set of objectives, measures and targets that are all linked together enabling SANParks to measure progress to achieving the goal (Value Proposition) –How was it developed and how was it adapted to suit SANParks The original concept was developed at Harvard Business School in 1988 A team of people from within SANParks defined the SANParks BSC which was then agreed by Exco. It has been developed to suit the context in which SANParks operates. No other organisation can have the same BSC that SANParks has.

SANParks Goal (Value Proposition) To manage a system of National Parks that represents the biodiversity, landscape and associated heritage assets of South Africa providing visitors with access to value for money unique experiences delivered through operational excellence that is underpinned by authentic constituency building and corporate governance for the benefit of all stakeholders

Body Benefits –What is the BSC intended to do? At an organisation level – to measure our progress on achieving our goal At an individual level – to ensure that what you are doing is linked directly to the achievement of SANParks goal –Benefits It focuses the organisation and division on those things that must be achieved to reach our goal It focuses the individual on what needs to be achieved (through the targets) reach the divisional and SANParks goal Clarification of objectives –The BSC specifically measures those objectives that the organisation has defined and thus clarifies what needs to be done Clarify expected outcomes –All employees of SANParks are being measured in a way that will enable the organisation to achieve its goal. Al the measures are linked together. (River Analogy)

Body My Role –Current BSC target market – who is affected The BSC measures are currently aimed at C-Band and above. It will, in time, these will be extended to include A and B bands –How the BSC will affect me You will be measured on the achievement of the targets that have been defined in your KPA document. Success in achieving these defined targets will enable the organisation to succeed –What role do I need to play You will be required to ensure that you are willing, able and accountable for achieving the targets that have been agreed with your supervisor / manager. Link to Me –The link between the BSC and you is through the KPA document. In this document you will have defined objectives, measures and targets which have come directly from the BSC objectives that you can contribute to achieving. –The BSC is not the Performance Evaluation process. The objectives measures and targets in your performance evaluation, via your KPA’s, have been defined by the BSC.

Conclusion The BSC is a tool to measure the performance of SANParks It benefits SANParks by defining the objectives which need to be measured in order that we achieve our goals It ensures that my goals are linked of to those of SANParks It helps me set targets (through KPA’s) to ensure that I am assisting SANParks in achievement of its goals It enables me to measure my progress towards the achievement of these goals through the Performance Assessment process

Challenges What will hinder achievement – can I foresee the potential challenges?
