Warm-Up Questions What makes a good researcher in psychology? What makes a good counselor in psychology? What makes a good client in psychology? What makes a good student of psychology?

Announcements Please email me if late DB postings have yet to be graded References/Recs

Assessment Why might a psychologist view past cases?

Assessment Psychologists spend a lot of time reviewing past cases in order to judge the effectiveness of treatment strategies, treatment mistakes, and rate of progress.

Assessment When might a psychologist consult colleagues about a case?

Assessment While some psychologists work alone, most work in an agency or school setting and so are only one of many people who work with a particular client. In these cases, once a client is ready to leave treatment, the psychologist meets with the rest of the professionals involved with the client to present the reasons why the client is ready for exit.

Assessment What is relapse?

Assessment ‘ Relapse ’ in this broad case means any return to old behaviors as a coping strategy. For children, this might mean a temporary return to aggressive behaviors. For mental health clients, this might mean a return to destructive behaviors. * At times, a client will unconsciously or even consciously return to old behaviors in order to spend more time in treatment. While this may not make much sense, remember that often clients will feel safe in their new treatment routine and will be afraid to face their lives without this support.

Assessment What suggests that a client has made progress? When is a client ready for termination?

Assessment When goals are being met, a client demonstrates “ progress ” If a client has completed all of his or her treatment goals and has not shown a significant pattern of relapse in the last third of treatment, the client is likely ready for treatment termination.

Assessment How are the achievements of goals measured?

Assessment In evaluating client progress, use both quantitative and qualitative methods to ensure that goals and expectations have been satisfactorily met. To assess treatment success though, most psychologists ask clients to consent to be contacted for a follow-up survey or appointment six months to a year following leaving service.

Assessment What are some positive strategies to help ensure continued success for a client post termination?

Assessment Often, the psychologist recommends an aftercare or follow- up program to help the client to make the transition from treatment to self-sufficiency.

Assessment What else is important to consider regarding assessment?

Assessment The client is so too assessing the counselor throughout the process, usually across the domains of professionalism, power, and relationship.
