3 Hindustani Music Hindustani music was developed around the 13 th and 14 th century AD. It was based around singing sacred texts, developing a strong and tradition over centuries. Hindustani music was influenced not only by ancient music traditions, native Indian sounds, but also the rich Persian performances of the Mughals.

4 Hindustani Music was first formalized in India in connection with preserving the sruti texts, primarily the four vedas, which are seen as ’apaurasheya’. Not only was the text important, but also the manner in which they had been enunciated by the immortals. Prosody and chanting were thus of great importance, and were enshrined in the two vedangas called shiksha and chhandas, these remained a key part of the brahmanic educational system till modern times.

5 Carnatic Music Contemporary Carnatic music can be traced back to the 15 th and 16 th century AD, where it developed in Karnataka in India. This genre is melodic and has improvised variations. This genre is mainly based around singing and even the instrumental parts are performed in a singing style known as gayaki. There are approximately 7.2 million scales in Carnatic music, but only 300 are still in use today.
