4 British Control Over India East India Company  Controls India through economic imperialism  Company uses an army including Indian soldiers known as “sepoys”  Battle of Plassey—Indian & French vs. British East India Company (BEIC) BEIC won & became the leading power in India India was seen as the most important colony  Due to its production of raw materials  Known as the “Jewel in the Crown”

6 Effects of British Rule Impact of Colonialism  Railroads move cash crops & goods faster  British control political & economic power  Cash crops reduced food production & caused famine, widespread starvation/hunger, in villages  Indian culture is disrupted due to racism & missionaries  Britain sought to “modernize” India  Improved sanitation & public health  Opened schools and colleges—literacy rate increased

9 The Sepoy Mutiny (1857) Indians Rebel  Sepoys refuse to use cartridges due to religious reasons  Many Sepoys were jailed, others rebelled  Took over Delhi, but couldn’t unite against the British b/c of religious differences (between the Hindus and Muslims) Results  Britain takes direct control of India  British control from 1857-1947 called the Raj  Increased distrust between Indians and British
