2. NAME AND ETHNICITY Kim is a little 9 year old Vietnamese girl. She is the 1 st in the garden and starts it.

3. PLANTS GROWN AND WHY She Grows Lima Beans like the beans she did as a class project a year ago. Kim wants honor her father who has passed away. She hopes planting the beans will let her fathers spirit see her doing good things in her life and being a farmer like him. She is determined to make the plants live.

4. CHARACTER TRAITS Lonely – Kim is lonely because she is the only one in her family to never meet her father. According to the text, “I thought about how my mother and sisters remembered my father, how they knew his face from every angle and held in their fingers the feel of his hands. I had no such memories to cry over (Fleischman 3). Hard working – The text states, “He would see my patience and hard work. I would show him that I could raise plants, as he had (Fleischman 4). This shows Kim was willing to do the work to have the plants grow. Determined – The author states, “Then I told myself that I must show my bravery” (Fleischman 3), which shows she would not give up on planting her seeds.

5. GAINS FROM THE GARDEN Kim gains comfort and a distraction from the death of her father. She can show honor and respect for her father by being a good farmer like he was.

6. THEME Comfort can be found in unexpected places is one theme of this chapter because Kim was able to feel more connected to her father through starting the garden. According to the text, “I would show him that I was his daughter” (Fleischman 4). Through her planting lima beans, Kim felt as if her father would finally know who she was.
