3 telecentre for excellence3 1.0 Tanzania in Brief DATA Population:37 million, 30% living in urban, 70% in rural Size: 945,000 sq. kms Teledensity: 18.3/100 Per capita income:$365 Climate: varies from tropical along coast to template highlands Terrain:plains along coast, central plateau, highlands in north& south

4 telecentre for excellence4 Location TANZANIA  Share boarders with 8 countries; Kenya, Uganda, DRC-Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda and Burundi

5 telecentre for excellence5 2.0 Why ICTs Knowledge is the most important factor in the success process Knowledge provides understanding for one to make right or wrong decisions Decisions are the determinants of the success of any initiative. Knowledge is the function of information ICTs are the best tools in the information service delivery

6 About Telecentres in TZ Sengerema Multipurpose Community Telecentre, started in 2001 to access affordable ICTs to rural settings and model for replication to other rural areas. Tanzania Telecentre Network, established 2007 to facilitate establishment and developmen of telecentres There are 23 recorded so far

7 ACTIVITIES Computer training Internet services – café and sharing Community Radio Secretarial bureau Community mobilization and sensitization IT-Consultancy

8 e- Governance Activities Training Computer applications to government & institution staff and individuals Providing Internet to the government – Local government (SDC) and District Commissioner Providing Internet to The Teachers Resource Centre Implementing a Wireless Mesh Network Project with the aim of providing Internet to all subdivisions of the local govt, Secondary Schools and Health Centres

Advise the govt, ICT institutions and experts on promotions and Awards on rural development. 6. Developed a programme namely, The Last-Mile Knowledge (LMK) for community excellence - through right decisions

17 Conclusion Telecentres have great potential in facilitating e- Governance initiatives. Suggest to IST-Africa and indeed participants of this conference to support the WMN Project, which is the pilot in East Africa for replication to other rural areas in Africa. Would appreciate your support in strategies on the implementation of the new dynamism-The Last-Mile- Knowledge(LMK), particularly on education system.
