3 Session Objectives Participants will be able to: Identify effective learning methodologies and rigor Utilize the engineering cycle to solve real world problems Create digital presentations to communicate experimental results and conclusions Identify STEM practices that can implemented at their school sites Access district created science and STEM resources Department of Science

4 Ice Breaker Observation – Video Camera Protocol Modified Each participant will view the same event and record their observations Participants will share their observations The group will examine how the observations were similar and different Department of Science

5 Learning Methodologies In your groups: 1.Designate an observer and a recorder. 2.The observer will make as many observations about your mystery object as they can. 3.The recorder will record all the observations the observer reports to them. 4.After 5 minutes all groups will share out their observations. 6 Project Based STEM Activity #1– Q1 Boat Challenge Department of Science

7 Problem Your company wants to be hired to transport building materials from Miami Beach to Fisher Island at the lowest possible cost. Cost of fuel is very expensive and storage is an issue. Your team has been asked to construct the most energy efficient boat possible. Expected Task Build a boat that can hold the most mass without sinking according to a certain budget. Project Based STEM Activity #1– Q1 Boat Challenge

8 Department of Science Criteria -Costs: 1cm 2 of foil= $10 1 cm of masking tape= $100 1 plastic straw= $500 -Each group should consist of 3-4 students Constraints Maximum Budget for construction materials $5,000 Project Based STEM Activity #1– Q1 Boat Challenge

9 Department of Science Materials Plastic tub, washers (may substitute with paper clips, plastic cubes or any standard weight), ruler, electronic scale or triple beam balance. Product 1.Brainstorm ways in which to design the boat with the fewest materials possible. 2.Create a sketch of the design of the boat that will keep the boat afloat and balanced. Think of ways to reinforce the bottom and how to make the walls to keep the water out. 3.Then build the model to replicate the sketch using the materials provided. 10 Department of Science Testing of Boat 1.Test the boat and record the maximum amount of washers (mass) it can hold before the boat sinks. 2.Record the bottom surface area of the boat. Redesign/ Re-test Based on Peer Review Questions Presentation of Final Solution Students will present their team’s boat design and budget to the class. They will test to see the maximum mass that their boat can hold. A class data chart will be constructed where the surface area of the boat and maximum mass is recorded per team. 11 Reflection: Engineering Activity Digital Convergence Use your tablet or device to create a short PowerPoint or Discovery Board Builder presentation to explain your results (Be sure to include all the steps in your design process) Discuss what was the best solution and what you could have done differently. Think Pair Share 1.What content is seen in this engineering activity? 2.What other grade levels might it support? 3.What competition opportunities might support these skills? Department of Science
